SEVERAL YEARS AGO, one of Lynn Wilson’s Moultrie Senior High School classmates asked the help of the retired educator, who at the time represented her county on the Regional Advisory Councils of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD).
Bob Rice wanted to give back to his hometown by supporting the construction of group homes to provide around-the-clock residential care for adults with severe developmental disabilities. He is a partner with Macon, Ga.- based All Care, which also provides in-home healthcare for individuals with developmental disabilities.
Wilson arranged a meeting between Rice and the appropriate contact with the DBHDD to set in motion the events that made the homes a reality in Moultrie. “That’s what the regional advisory councils do,” Wilson said. “They connect the dots.”
County commissioners appoint representatives to one of the six regional advisory councils, which serve as liaisons between the local community and the DBHDD. This year, there is also a focus on presenting the results of a survey designed to further the understanding of the needs of each county and raise awareness of the work of the councils among county commissioners.
